Downlights are a very popular form of lighting and can be found in every room of a home and a lot of business premises. They come in various styles and shades including white, polished chrome, brushed steel and gold.
There are a few types of downlights which are mains volatge, 12 volts and LED.
Mains voltage downlights are very simple and consist of the mains hard wiring into the fitting and a lampholder. The 12v lights are similar but have a transformer wired between the mains wiring and the lampholder which steps the voltage down from 230v to 12v. Some people prefer 12v lights as they prefer the light output to mains lighting.
LED downlights can be supplied as a unit as a whole (light and fitting in one) or the lamps (bulbs) can be supplied to fit in existing 230v or 12v fittings although 12v fitting will require the current transformer to be change to a LED driver. The cost of LED lamps and fittings is greater than the standard halogen lamps but they have a longer average life and run off a much smaller wattage saving electricity over a period of time.
Shabby chic and the vintage look is huge right now and with that comes vintage lighting. The look consist of industrial style fittings with the vintage carbon filament bulb. The lighting can be in various forms such as pendants, walls lights or surface lampholders which do not have the flexible cable of a pendant.
A lovely effect for the perfect vintage look.

As for statement lighting there are the same options as above as well as ground lights. spike lights around the path and downlights along the soffit borads of the house!
Pendant lights can be a simple one light fitting or more elaborate 2,3,4,5 or 6 light fittings in the centre of the room however it is becoming more common to have 2 or 3 separate pendants over the kitchen/dining table or over an island in the centre of your kitchen. This can create a nice atmosphere but also can really be used to make a statement and can be combined with downlights!
